Chapel, excluding bell tower (Box AB 148): inscription by order of 29 February 1972

Origin and history

The chapel Saint-Gengoulph de Varennes-sur-Amance is a religious building located in the commune of Champigny-sous-Varennes, in the Haute-Marne department (52), in the Grand Est region. This monument, which has been a part of the Historical Monuments since 1972, is distinguished by its status as a communal property. Its exact address, 6 Rue Saint-Jeangon, originated from GPS coordinates, although the Merimée base also mentions a location at Terre-Natale under the same INSEE code (52504).

Medieval or modern chapels, like this one, often played a central role in the life of rural communities. They served as places of worship, gathering for local holidays, and sometimes asylum or geographical landmarks in areas with limited infrastructure. In the Far East, a region marked by a strong agricultural and artisanal tradition, these buildings also reflected the religious beliefs and practices that rhythmized daily life.

Their preservation, as here with the 1972 inscription, is evidence of the people's attachment to their local heritage.
