Origin and history

The creation of the Academy of Avesnois is based on the initiative of Pierre Camusat, director of the Textile Training Centre of Fourmies, who wanted to save textile machines from 1880 to 1930. In the 1970s the idea of a "Museum of Textile" emerged, supported by the Centre Socio-Culturel de Fourmies in 1977. This project is part of the nascent movement of ecomuseumography in France, focusing on humans and their environment.

In 1978, an extensive collection campaign was launched among the inhabitants: oral testimonies, archives, objects related to industrial and daily life. Schools and volunteer teams are actively involved. After a decade of preparation, the first prefiguration exhibition opened in 1980 in the former Prouvost-Masurel mill, acquired by the municipality. This site, built in 1874, became the heart of the ecomuseum, symbolizing the industrial memory of the region.

Today, the ecomuseum of Avesnois pursues its mission to safeguard and enhance local heritages, integrating social and associative dimensions. Its collections, with nearly 50,000 objects, cover textiles, glass, industrial and rural history, as well as the daily lives of the inhabitants. The collection policy mainly targets the arrondissement of Avesnes-sur-Helpe, while extending to the Hauts-de-France region and the Euro-region, in collaboration with artisanal and industrial actors.

The ecomuseum is based on the principles of the Federation of Ecomuseums and Museums of Society, linking past, present and future. It highlights technical collections unique in France, such as those dedicated to glass and textiles, as well as ethnological backgrounds illustrating the social history of the territory. Its anchoring in the former Prouvost-Masurel mill reinforces its role as a witness to the industrialisation and socio-economic transformations of Avesnois.
