Origin and history

The castle of Marfontaine, located in the department of Aisne in the Hauts-de-France region, is a building characteristic of the seigneurial architecture of the 16th and 17th century hinge. Built between 1617 and 1619, it is distinguished by its rectangular structure divided into two parts: one half dedicated to housing, the other to a farm. A portion of the building has partially collapsed, but its facades retain inscriptions in overcooked bricks, testimony of its history.

The village of Marfontaine was mentioned in 1051 as the property of the bishop of Laon, Lietry, before successively passing to the families of Marfontaine (1137) and Venderesse (1383). The present castle was erected under the influence of Marguerite de Vaudier de Beaumont, widow of Jacques Raoult de Fay d'Athies, whose lineage had been in possession of the estate since 1433, and remarried to François de Proissy. These inscriptions and the mixed structure (logis/farm) reflect its role both residential and economic in the local seigneury.

Ranked a Historic Monument in 1998, the castle today protects its home, its agricultural buildings and the remains of its enclosure. Although private property, its brick and stone architecture, typical of northern France, as well as its decorative details (overcooked bricks) make it a remarkable example of the aristocratic rural heritage of modern times.
