Origin and history
The Mattelon workshop is a weaving workshop located in the 4th arrondissement of Lyon, 10 rue Richan. It is representative of the canut buildings of the first half of the 19th century, dedicated to the silk industry. This workshop illustrates the transition between craftsmanship and mechanization, with trades with arms still preserved today.
In 1878 the weaver Pierre Millan installed the main workshop on the second floor of the building, supplemented by an annex workshop, reeling rooms and a dinner for the workers on the third floor. These arrangements reflect the typical organization of home work in the Lyon silk industry.
In 1939 Georges Mattelon acquired the building and partially modernized the installations between 1948 and 1951, adding a workshop of mechanical trades to the back of the plot. Despite this development, traditional production on hand-held trades was maintained, reflecting the persistence of craft methods.
The workshop has been listed as historic monuments since 15 March 2013. This protection covers all facades and roofs, as well as the workshop on the second floor in its entirety. The site remains today a private property, without regular public access.
