Origin and history

The Champmarin mansion, located in Aubigné-Racan in the Sarthe, is an emblematic building of the First Renaissance, built in the 15th century. It consists of a sober house body, organized around two fireplace rooms per level, reflecting the residential architecture of the era. Nearby, the remains of two towers and a chapel, located north of the building, recall its past importance.

The land of Champmarin was attested from the 11th century, but it was in the 16th century that it gained in fame. It then belonged to Mathurin de Vendômois, whose widow remarried with Louis de Bueil. Their son, Honorat de Bueil de Racan, renowned poet, was born in this mansion in 1589. This link with literature is a lasting sign of its history.

Partially classified as historical monuments in 1978, the manor house protects its 16th century elements as well as the remains of the towers and chapel. These protections underline its heritage value, both architectural and memorial, as also evidenced by its mention in the departmental (Sarthe) and regional (Pays de la Loire) inventories.
