Origin and history

The Maison du Pilier aux Clefs is a historic monument located in the town of Le Mans, in the Pays de la Loire region. Built in the 16th century, this house is distinguished by its typical Renaissance architecture, with remarkable facades and roofs. It is located at 83 Grande-Rue, although GPS coordinates also suggest a nearby address at 10 Rue Saint-Honoré. Its inscription as a Historical Monument by decree of 13 March 1945 bears witness to its heritage importance, specifically protecting its facades on street and roof.

In the 16th century, the city of Le Mans was a dynamic urban centre, marked by economic and cultural growth. The bourgeois houses, like that of Pillar aux Clefs, reflected the prosperity of local merchants and artisans. These buildings served both as a place of residence and as a work space, illustrating the close link between private life and work in the cities of that time. The protection of this architectural heritage allows today to preserve the memory of this pivotal period between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.

The information available on this monument comes mainly from the Merimée base and Monumentum. Although its exact location is controversial (between the Grande-Rue and Rue Saint-Honoré), its status as a Historic Monument and its protected elements make it a valuable testimony to the urban history of Le Mans. The accuracy of its location is assessed as fair, which underlines the need for further research to refine its geolocation.
