Origin and history

The Château de Roucourt, located in the Nord department, was built in 1765 in an architectural Louis XVI style. It was erected for Jean François Bérenger, then commissioner general of the artillery fonts of France. This new castle replaces an old building located further north of the village of Roucourt. Its architecture reflects the artistic influences and aesthetic codes of the era, marking a transition to a more elegant and refined style.

Since 1790, the estate belongs to the family of Baron Becquet de Megille, who was then mayor of Douai. The family continued to develop and embellish the castle and its park. The park, which surrounds the castle, is notable for its landscape features, including a Chinese pavilion, a former pilori of the village, and a dovecote. It is included in the pre-inventory of remarkable gardens, highlighting its heritage and historical importance.

The Parc du Château de Roucourt also includes an orchard and a vegetable garden, adding to the diversity and richness of this landscaped complex. These elements, combined with the history of the castle, make it a site representative of the architectural and natural heritage of Hauts-de-France. The domain is also referenced in the Mérimée base, which attests to its cultural and historical value.
