Origin and history
La Croix de la Roussarie is a monumental cross located in the commune of Curières, in the Aveyron department, in the Occitanie region. Dating from the 15th century, it is located on the road to Saint-Chély and has been classified as historical monuments since 15 September 1928. This type of road cross was common in the Middle Ages to mark roads or places of assembly.
The cross consists of a circular barrel topped by a capital adorned with curly leaves. The upper part represents Christ on one side and the Virgin to the Child on the other. On the barrel, a figure holding a key and an open book, probably Saint Peter, is also carved. The whole is made of granite, a material typical of the region.
These crosses often served as landmarks for pilgrims or travellers, while having a religious and symbolic function. They reflect the importance of the Christian faith in the daily life of the rural populations of the time, as well as their artisanal know-how in stone carving.
The building was officially recognized for its heritage value in 1928, when it was classified as a historic monument. This protection is intended to preserve its integrity and to bear witness to local history. The cross of the Roussarie is today a representative example of the medieval road crosses still visible in Occitanie.
