Origin and history
The Roman quarry of Mont Justicier, located in La Turbie in the Alpes-Maritimes, is a historical site marked by two distinct periods: Antiquity and the 18th century. This monument combines remains of Roman exploitation with a medieval judicial structure, the patibular forks, used for capital executions. The two pillars of the gallows, visible from the 17th century on local maps, illustrate this dual vocation: one of the drums still remains today, while the other is reduced to the state of stump.
The Gibet du Mont Justicier, classified as a historical monument in 1944, consists of two columns connected by a horizontal beam, typical of Provencal patibular forks. The classification also includes a radius of 20 meters around their base, as well as the adjacent Roman quarry (cadastre B 241 to 243), protected by a decree of 9 August 1944. This site reflects both the ancient industrial heritage and the judicial practices of the Ancien Régime, where the Mount Justicier served as a place of execution since the Middle Ages.
Available sources, including Wikipedia and the Merimée base, highlight the architectural and historical importance of the site. The exact location at 134 Chemin des Carrières Romaines and its Insee code (06150) confirm its anchoring in the heritage of the Alpes-Maritimes. Owned by the municipality of La Turbie, the site remains a rare testimony of the superposition of the epochs, between Roman mining and medieval judicial symbolism.
