Origin and history

Amphoralis, the Gallo-Roman Pottery Museum, is located in Sallèles-d'Aude, in the Occitanie region. This monument is specifically dedicated to the presentation and enhancement of the Gallo-Roman ceramic techniques and productions. Its name directly evokes amphorae, these emblematic containers of antiquity, often used for the transport and storage of foodstuffs such as wine or oil.

The location of the museum in this Audoise commune is not annoyed: the region was, during the Gallo-Roman period, an active pottery production centre. Local workshops provided much of the Garbonnaise Gaul, or even beyond. This type of museum allows to put ancient crafts in its economic and social context, illustrating the key role of potters in trade and the daily life of the people of the time.
