Origin and history
The bridge of the Pilgrims of Saint-Chély-d'Aubrac is a medieval structure built in the late Middle Ages, crossing the Boralde River. Located on Via Podiensis, one of the major routes of the pilgrimage of Santiago de Compostela, it has been classified as UNESCO World Heritage due to its historical role in this spiritual itinerary. The bridge, inscribed as a historic monument since 10 August 2005, is distinguished by its structure in basalt and micaschist, sixteen meters long and composed of two slightly inclined arches.
On the bridge parapet there is a road cross, decorated with a bas-relief representing a pilgrim with his cape and staff, symbol of the travelers going to Compostela. The cross itself is framed by the figures of Christ, the Virgin and Saint John, reinforcing its religious and commemorative character. This sculptural detail illustrates the importance of the bridge as a place of passage and devotion for pilgrims crossing Aubrac.
The bridge now belongs to the municipality of Saint-Chély-d-Aubrac, in the department of Aveyron (Occitanian region). Its state of conservation and its inscription in the heritage reflect both its architectural interest and its cultural heritage related to medieval travel. The materials used, such as the local basalt, bear witness to the construction techniques of the time, adapted to the resources available in this volcanic region of the Rouergue.
Although the sources do not mention a specific sponsor or founding event, the book is part of the network of medieval infrastructures designed to facilitate pilgrimages. Its classification by UNESCO and its protection as historical monuments underline its status as a heritage to be preserved, both for its history and for its symbolic value in the European cultural landscape.
