Origin and history
The Logis de la Moussière, located in Sainte-Ouenne in New Aquitaine, is a historical monument built between the 16th century and the first half of the 17th century. This body of rectangular houses, in rubble with cut stone openings, fits into a courtyard closed by buildings, as shown in the cadastral plan of the 19th century. The triangular pediments and the round tower vestige of defensive elements testify to its residential and defensive character.
The owners of the estate are attested as early as the 16th century, although their names are not specified in the available sources. Inside, organized around a distribution corridor, houses two chimneys decorated with painted decorations: one representing Saint Peter denying Christ, the other a gallant scene. These elements illustrate the social status of the occupants, probably from the small rural nobility.
The architecture of the house, both sober and elegant, reflects the characteristics of the local seigneurial houses of the time. The building was partially protected by an order of 14 May 1987, covering the body of the house, the staircase and the two fireplaces with painted decoration. Today, its location is estimated as "a priori satisfactory", according to available data.
The region, then integrated into the Poitou-Charentes, was marked by a rural economy and a social hierarchy in which the small nobility played an important local role. These houses served both as a residence and as a symbol of power, while remaining functional for a nearby farm.
The absence of detailed sources on the occupants or specific events related to the home limits the knowledge of its specific history. However, its inscription as a Historic Monument underscores its heritage interest, both for its architecture and for the interior decorations preserved.
The approximate GPS coordinates (15 Chemin de Rault, 79220 Sainte-Ouenne) and its Insee code (79284) place it in the Deux-Sèvres department, near Niort, confirming its anchoring in the Poitevin territory.
