Origin and history
The castle of Seneujols, located in the commune of the same name in Haute-Loire (Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes), is a typical example of the seigneurial architecture of the Velay. Built between the 14th and 17th centuries, it combines a medieval dungeon (14th-15th centuries) and a fortified enclosure, reinforced during the Wars of Religion. These defensive elements were then transformed in the 17th and 19th centuries to adapt the castle to residential and agricultural uses, illustrating its functional evolution over time.
Inside, the castle preserves 17th century carpentry as well as a decor painted in trompe-l'oeil, testimonies of its aristocratic past. A highlight of his recent history was the addition, during the Second World War, of murals made by an Italian prisoner in a small living room. These artistic elements, associated with the chapel, communes and interior decorations (woodworks, chimneys, staircases), motivated its total inscription as historical monuments by order of 19 May 2003.
The site thus embodies the changes of the local nobility, from a medieval fortress to a hybrid residence, mixing military heritage and domestic life. Its inscription protects all its components: dungeon, house, pregnant, but also the decorations that adorn its spaces, reflecting almost six centuries of regional history.
