Origin and history

The Château de Larunque came into being in the 17th century with a farm called "Larenque", dependent on the neighbouring estate of the Château de Lagurgue. It was only in 1870 that Xavier de La Croix de Ravignan erected the present castle on inherited lands, making it a prestigious residence. This estate, marked by family inheritances, remains in the same line until its sale in 1957, after being transformed into a secondary residence by his daughter Marie-Antoinette and her husband, Raymond Merle de la Brugière de Laveaucoulet.

In 1977, a fire ravaged much of the castle, leaving it abandoned for years. It was only in 1993 that a passionate art entrepreneur, Alain Castant, bought it and undertook an ambitious restoration. Inspired by the Italian Renaissance, it adds a Italian theatre, a monumental staircase and a terrace, making the place a unique artistic centre. The castle then changed hands several times, including an English businessman and a professional jockey.

Since 2021, the château de Larunque has been converted into a place of tourist accommodation and seminars, focusing on a strong ecological approach. Certified European Ecolabel in 2024, it offers low-carbon stays, professional seminars and cultural events, while focusing on waste reduction, biomass heating and environmental awareness. The domain is today a sustainable resourcing space, combining historical heritage and ecological innovation.

The current architecture of the castle, the fruit of post-fire restoration, combines Renaissance elegance and modern functionality. Its acroater roof, statues, monumental staircase and theatre transformed into a versatile space make it a unique place. The surrounding park and the large terrace facing it complete this set, providing a setting conducive to relaxation and creativity.

The successive owners marked the history of the castle, from Xavier de La Croix de Ravignan, its founder, to Marion Lafouge, the current owner. Each has brought his vision, whether through architectural transformations, artistic or ecological vocations, making the castle of Larunque a symbol of resilience and adaptation throughout the eras.
