Origin and history

The Ecomusée du Mont Lozère is a cultural and natural project designed to enhance the heritage of Mont Lozère, located in the commune of Pont-de-Montvert (Lozère). Its headquarters were the House of Mount Lozère, closed since October 2018, which housed a multidisciplinary museum covering geology, fauna, flora, history and local traditions. The principle of ecomuseum is based on an in situ approach: themes are explored directly in their natural environment, via ten thematic interpretation trails (such as the Menhirs trail or the Finiels trail). The collections, derived from donations from the population, illustrate traditional activities (wool work, agricultural tools, wood or stone mining).

The House of Mount Lozère was originally to exhibit part of these collections in a new building planned for 2025, thus reducing their visibility for several years. The trails, on the other hand, remain accessible and offer educational sheets for adults and children, such as that of the forest (starting on the D998) or the summit of Finiels (1,699 m), explaining the elevation lawns. The ecomuseum is part of the National Park of the Cevennes and highlights a heritage both material (tools, furniture) and intangible (know-how, landscapes), with a focus on local history since protohistory.

The objects exhibited reflect the daily life and ancestral trades of the region, such as agriculture, crafts and construction. The project is based on collaboration with the locals, who contributed to the collections through donations, and aims to pass on this heritage to future generations. Despite the closure of the main museum, the trails and activities (such as the nature festival of Parc des Cevennes) maintain a tourist and educational dynamic. The ecomuseum is labeled Musée de France and enjoys a strong territorial anchor, between collective memory and environmental preservation.
