The chimney in its entirety, including its plate ground (Box BV 123): inscription by order of 27 June 2002

Origin and history

The "Morange" fireplace is an old sugar factory chimney located in Saint-Benoît, on the island of La Réunion. This French overseas department, located in the southwest of the Indian Ocean, has experienced a strong sugar industry, whose chimney is an emblematic vestige. It has been included in the additional inventory of Historic Monuments since June 27, 2002, including its plated area.

The fireplace is located precisely in the Morang district, at the address 29 Safer-Morang Road. It is now owned by the municipality of Saint-Benoît. Its inscription as a historic monument underlines its importance in the industrial heritage of Réunion, linked to the cultivation of sugar cane, a major economic activity of the island.

The sugar factory to which this chimney belonged is part of the economic history of Réunion, marked by the exploitation of sugar cane since the 19th century. This type of monument illustrates the industrial development of the island, as well as its social and economic organization around this agricultural production. Remnants such as this chimney recall the importance of this industry in structuring landscapes and local communities.

The Morange chimney, although disused, remains a symbol of the industrial heritage of Réunion. Its ranking preserves the memory of this time and offers a material testimony of the economic history of the island. It is also a point of interest to understand the evolution of the techniques and infrastructure related to sugar production.

Available data from sources such as Wikipedia and Monumentum confirm its status as a protected monument and its role in local history. The chimney is today an element of the cultural landscape of Saint-Benoît, accessible to the public although its current use is not specified in the sources consulted.
