Origin and history
The Museum of Archery and Valois was founded in 1949 in Crépy-en-Valois, thanks to the initiative of the Association of Friends of Valois. Its collections, enriched by donations from Darc companies, d'archers families, and local church depots, cover the evolution of the arch from prehistory to the present day. Unusual objects, such as vases of Provincial Bouquets or flags of Companies, illustrate the archer traditions of Valois, while a room is dedicated to Saint Sebastian, patron saint of archers.
The collection of sacred art, established in 1973, includes 150 wooden and polychrome stone statues dating from the 13th to the 19th century, from the churches of Valois. These municipal depots complement the military and ethnological themes of the museum, which also explores archery throughout the world (Europe, Africa, Asia, Americas, Oceania). The museum is housed in the former Saint Aubin Castle, a remarkable building composed of an urban palace, two superimposed chapels (Saint Aubin and Sainte-Marie), and a junction building.
Labeled Musée de France, the establishment showcases a unique technical and cultural heritage, combining local history and global influences. The permanent exhibitions highlight the anchoring of traditional celebrations of archery in Valois, while offering a panorama of weapons and practices across the continents. However, the accuracy of its location remains poor (note 5/10), according to available data.
