Origin and history
The 13th century House, located in Saint-Benoît-sur-Loire in the Loiret department, is an emblematic monument of medieval civil architecture. Built in the 13th century, it bears witness to the built heritage of this period, marked by a growing urban organization. Its classification as Historic Monument by decree of 13 August 1906 underlines its heritage importance, especially for its facade, a protected element.
In the 13th century, the Centre-Val de Loire region, then integrated into the royal domain or under seigneurial influence, experienced significant economic and social development. The urban houses of that time often reflect the prosperity of the towns, linked to trade, crafts or religious activities. Saint-Benoît-sur-Loire, with its neighbouring Benedictine abbey, was a place of passage and community life, where this type of building could serve as a dwelling, a place of commerce or a reception for pilgrims.
The protection of its façade in 1906 is part of a broader desire to preserve the material traces of this medieval past.
