Road Cross: by decree of 10 August 1951
Origin and history
The Calvary of Sainte-Marguerite in Escoutoux is a road cross dating from the 16th century, classified as a Historical Monument by decree of 10 August 1951. Its branches and cylindrical barrel bear, on one side, a crucified Christ, and on the other, a Virgin with the Child. This monument, located in the hamlet of Sainte-Marguerite, is distinguished by its base adorned with four female characters in weeping, dressed in folded draperies, placed at each of the upper angles.
The location of the calvary, although specified by an address (17 Chemin de l'Étang, Escoutoux), remains approximate according to available sources, with a cartographic accuracy deemed fair (note 5/10). Owned by the commune, this calvary illustrates the rural religious art of the Renaissance in Auvergne, marked by expressive sculptural representations and symbolic motifs linked to Christ's passion.
Available data from Monumentum and the Merimée archives highlight its local heritage importance. The 1951 ranking attests to its historical and artistic value, while its geographical location in the Puy-de-Dôme makes it a witness to the religious traditions and devotional practices of the modern era in Auvergne. No information is provided on its current accessibility or contemporary use (visits, events).
