Origin and history
The fortified house of Verrey-sous-Salmaise is a 17th century building located in the Côte-d'Or department, Burgundy-Franche-Comté. This monument, classified among the Historical Monuments, is distinguished by its protected architectural elements, including the facades and roofs of the two entrance towers, as well as the facade of the building overlooking the courtyard. These characteristics reflect the importance of strong houses in the region at that time, often linked to defence and local seigneurial life.
The official protection of certain elements of the strong house, such as the entrance towers, the façade of the main building and the well, was established by an order of 12 February 1971. This inscription bears witness to the heritage value of the site, while stressing its historical role in the architectural landscape of Burgundy. The well, a practical and symbolic element, recalls the importance of water resources in the fortified constructions of this period.
Located at R.D. 26 or 23 Rue du Giboux, the Verrey-sous-Salmaise fort house is located with an accuracy deemed satisfactory (level 7/10). This monument is part of a rural Burgundy context marked, in the seventeenth century, by a society still very hierarchical, where the fortified houses often served as residences for noble or wealthy families, while playing a role in the economic and social organization of the surrounding villages.
