Origin and history

The church of Notre-Dame de Villeneuve-l'Archêque, founded in the 12th century under the leadership of the Count of Champagne, became a seigneury of the archbishops of Sens. This medieval village, marked by Champagne suzeraineté, sees its church profoundly remodelled in the 13th and 16th centuries. The Gothic nave, the transept and the choir (rebuilt in 1530-1540) illustrate these major architectural transformations, while the northern portal, a 13th century masterpiece of statuary, celebrates the Virgin with sculptures inspired by Champagne, including an emblematic smiled angel.

The northern portal, classified among the jewels of Gothic art, presents a tympanum and a frieze narrating Marian history, surrounded by yousures decorated with biblical figures. The traces of original polychromy, the medallions of the capital sins and the sculpted lamp-ends of dragons devouring grapes reveal a complex religious symbolism. The Renaissance arrow in golden bronze, overtaking the tower-clocher, and the 19th century stained glass windows (restored in 2009) complete this heritage, while the interior houses major works such as a Tomblay of 1528 attributed to the Master of Chaource.

Ranked a historic monument in 1886, the church preserves baroque elements (master altar, painting of the Annunciation) and Renaissance (statues of Saint Anne, Pietà), as well as traces of local political history. The presence of Saint Louis, represented holding the Crown of thorns, recalls the solemn reception of this relic in 1239, an event linked to the construction of the Sainte-Chapelle in Paris. The Sulpician additions of the 19th century and the tributes to the deaths of 1914-1918 bear witness to his continuing memorial role.

The building, owned by the commune of Villeneuve-l'Archêque (Yonne), is part of the diocese of Sens-Auxerre. Its Latin cross plan, its wrought iron grid separating the nave from the sanctuary, and its lateral chapels (like that dedicated to the souls of purgatory) reflect a medieval liturgical organization adapted to stylistic evolutions. The recent restoration of stained glass windows and the creation of a contemporary stained glass window in 2009 highlight the vitality of this heritage, between Gothic heritage and current parish life.
