Origin and history
La Croix de chemin de Mailly-le-Camp is a monument located in the commune of Mailly-le-Camp, in the Aube department, in the Île-de-France region. Dated from the 16th century, it is representative of the road crosses erected at that time, often for religious or commemorative purposes, and generally marked a gathering place or landmark for travellers and local inhabitants. In the 16th century, the Aube region, then integrated into Champagne, was marked by a mainly agricultural and artisanal economy.
The road crosses played an important role in daily life, serving as spiritual or geographical landmarks. They were often erected near villages or along roads, symbolizing the presence of the Christian faith in public space. These monuments also reflected the religious beliefs and practices of the time, in a context where the Catholic Church occupied a central place in society.
