Moulin de Guardienna (Case D 252): inscription by order of 29 July 1987

Origin and history

The Guardienna mill, located in Porto-Vecchio, Corsica, is a water mill built in the late eighteenth century. It is intended for the moulding of cereals and illustrates a pre-industrial technology that lasted until World War II. This monument, unique in its kind in the region, preserves original elements such as the damenée canal (bief damont), a vertical forced column, and two granite wheels still in place. Its mechanism was based on a horizontal driving wheel, connected to the wheels by a "mill iron", a metal rod.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the mill underwent structural changes to modernize its operation. The wooden base was replaced by an iron rail, and the vault of the first level, housing the driving wheel, gave way to a concrete ceiling. Despite these transformations, the mill retains its original organization in two levels: the ground floor for the wheel and the upper floor for the millstones, where the cereals were processed into flour.

Built in granite rubble, typical of local architecture, the mill also includes a tail-yard to restore water to the stream after use. Its inscription as a Historic Monument by decree of 29 July 1987 underlines its heritage importance. It reflects the agricultural and craft practices of Corsica prior to the industrial era, as well as the adaptation of traditional techniques to the changing needs of rural communities.

The site, although protected, does not have accurate information about its current accessibility (visits, rental, or accommodation). Its exact address, 9001 Guardienna in Porto-Vecchio (South Korea), is referenced in the Merimée database under the Insee 2A247 code. The accuracy of its geographical location is considered satisfactory, facilitating its identification in the local landscape.
