Origin and history

The Château de la Vacherie is a neoclassical residence built around 1810 on the commune of Barquet, in the department of Eure (Normandie). It replaces an 18th century castle destroyed during the French Revolution. Its architecture, marked by an ionic porch and an oval living room, evokes Palladian villas, with a stone structure and a discreet roof in slate.

The castle was commissioned by Mr Martel and designed by architect Fillette, while Loisel and Lenoir realized the interior decorations. Its inscription in historic monuments in 1931 underscores its heritage value. Located between Beaumont-le-Roger and Conches-en-Ouche, it dominates the Risle valley, west of the Neubourg plateau.

The site, now privately owned, combines monumentality and sobriety, with a body of compact houses and austere decorative elements such as frontons and cornices. Its history reflects post-revolutionary architectural transformations, combining classical heritage and 19th century innovations.
