Origin and history

The 18th century wrought iron and cast iron cross is located in the heart of the bastide of Saint-Sulpice-sur-Lèze, on the Place de l'Hôtel de Ville (southeastern corner). It is based on a brick and stone pedestal, typical of local achievements. The symbolic elements – lance, sponge, instruments of the Passion – as well as the summital cock, fused in two parts, illustrate a classical religious iconography. Originally positioned more to the west, it was moved in 1950 when it was added to the Historic Monuments.

The brick pedestal, sober and functional, contrasts with the richness of wrought iron patterns, reflecting both local craftsmanship and Christian traditions. The cock, symbol of the Resurrection, dominates the whole, while the instruments of the Passion recall the devotional context of the era. The cross thus embodies the religious and artisanal heritage of the Bastide, marked by a modest and symbolic bill.

His move in 1950, coinciding with his ranking, underlines the importance attached to his preservation. Originally, its more eccentric location may suggest a marker or boundary role in urban space. Today, it is a focal point of the square, testifying to the persistence of religious symbols in the Occitan public space of the eighteenth century.
