Origin and history
The twin farms of Verges, located west of the local castle, were built in 1742 and 1743. Their architecture reflects the agricultural practices of the 18th century in the Lower Burgundy country: the living spaces, composed of a kitchen and a vaulted room, are joined to outbuildings (grange and stable). The lava and arch cover of the stable door illustrates the regional constructive techniques of the time. These farms, classified as Historic Monument in 2001, reflect the spatial and functional organization of rural farms under the Old Regime.
The layout of the farms, with their living central span flanked by agricultural buildings, met the needs of an autonomous farm. This model, common in Burgundy-Franche-Comté, optimised space and travel between living areas, storage (grange) and breeding ( stable). The ridge vaults, characteristic of the peasant homes in the region, ensured better food conservation and increased resistance to weather. Their proximity to the castle suggests a link to a local seigneury, although the archives do not specify their sponsor.
Fully classified (buildings and decorations) by order of 18 December 2001, these farms constitute a preserved example of 18th century rural architecture. Their inscription in the title of Historical Monuments underlines their heritage value, both for their conservation status and for their representativeness of Jura farms. The GPS coordinates available (3 Rue du Château, Verges) allow an approximate location, assessed as "a priori satisfactory" by official sources.
