Origin and history

Saint-Thomas-Becket Church in Boissy-sous-Saint-Yon is a Catholic parish church dedicated to Saint Thomas Becket, located in the Essonne department, Île-de-France. Its origin dates back to at least the 12th century, when a first church was mentioned in historical texts. This original building was destroyed during the Hundred Years War, a conflict that deeply marked the region and led to the reconstruction of many religious buildings.

In the 15th century, a chapel was erected to replace the original church, becoming the new place of parish worship. This building, which went through the centuries, was partially restored in the eighteenth century, including two of its chapels. This work demonstrates the continued importance of the building to the local community, despite historical and architectural upheavals.

The church was recognized for its heritage value as early as 1948, when it was listed as historic monuments. More recently, a decree of 6 May 2015 elevated its status to that of classification, offering enhanced protection to the entire building. Today, it remains a symbol of the religious and architectural heritage of the Essonne, while being the property of the commune of Boissy-sous-Saint-Yon.
