Square tower forming part of the former fortifications: inscription by decree of 12 December 1939
Origin and history
The square tower of Trie-sur-Baïse is the only relatively intact vestige of the old fortifications of the bastide, founded at the end of the 14th century. Built of bricks and pebbles, this rectangular tower housed a enclosure door with a full arch and stone leggings. The arched passage in a cradle, equipped with murderers, allowed to defend the surrounding ditches. Its architecture reflects the military techniques of the time, although its current roof does not match the original style.
The tower was classified as a Historic Monument by order of December 12, 1939, recognizing its heritage value. It bears witness to the urban history of Trie-sur-Baïse, a typical southwestern bastide, where fortifications played a key role in protecting the inhabitants and controlling access. Today, it remains a symbol of the local medieval heritage, despite subsequent changes.
Located at 1 Rue de la Tour Carrée, its location corresponds to the old enclosure, of which it was one of the strategic points. The available sources (Monumentum, Mérimée base) confirm its inscription in the title of Historical Monuments, stressing its importance for the understanding of Occitan bastides. No information is available on its current use (visits, rentals, etc.).
