Kervaudu Cross: inscription by decree of 18 August 1944

Origin and history

La Croix de Kervaudu is a cross located in the commune of Croisic, in the Loire-Atlantique department, in the Pays de la Loire region. Dating from the 17th century, it is a typical example of the cross of paths or crossroads erected in this region at that time. Its designation as historic monuments in 1944 bears witness to its local heritage importance.

The road crosses, such as the one in Kervaudu, often served as landmarks for travellers or pilgrims, while playing a religious and social role in rural communities. In the 17th century, the Croisic region, then facing the sea, lived mainly in fishing, maritime trade and salt mining. These monuments also marked the boundaries of parishes or properties, strengthening their anchoring in the landscape and everyday life.

The cross of Kervaudu is now protected and belongs to the municipality of Croisic. Although its precise location is documented (48 Rue Henri Dunant), the available sources do not mention specific anecdotes or architectural details. Its classification in 1944 is part of a desire to preserve the religious and historical heritage of the Loire-Atlantique, rich in such buildings.
