Origin and history

Fleyriat Castle, located in Viriat in the department of Ain, consists of two distinct parts: an agricultural farm dating back to the late eighteenth century and a neo-Renaissance style castle built in 1867. The oldest farm includes buildings such as the "square house", the orangery (1803), stables, and a washhouse, all organized around a central axis marked by a so-called "Chinese" portal. These buildings, in stone and brick, reflect a local architecture inspired by the 16th and 17th centuries, with elements such as pilasters and arches in the middle of the wall.

The park, designed by architect Édouard Corroyer and landscape architect Derussy, is inspired by the picturesque 19th-century gardens, with petal alleys, an island accessible by a bridge, and varied vegetation. Corroyer, pupil of Viollet-le-Duc, also designed the castle, a simple rectangle flanked by turrets, with a facade ordered by pilasters and roofing sets. Inside, a central corridor serves the rooms, and a monumental staircase leads to the first floor. The estate, which has been listed as historical monuments since 2013, is partially accessible to the public during summer guided tours and during Heritage Days.

The history of the estate dates back to 1747, with progressive agricultural development until the early 19th century. In 1862, a descendant of Baron Loubat de Bohan, owner of the site, built the present castle by Corroyer. The latter has designed up to the interior details, incorporating classical and neo-Renaissance architectural references. The site preserves traces of its agricultural past, such as stables with their original furniture, a saddlery, and a historic irrigation system. The initials "LB" (Bohan's Loubat) are still on the orangery pediment, recalling the legacy of the former owners.

The materials used, such as honeycombs, flint, Montmerle stone, and brick, are typical of the region. The agricultural buildings, covered with vines in spalier, illustrate a mixed operation, between cultivation and breeding. The estate, with its fence walls, entrance gate, and original masonry elements, forms a coherent whole, fully protected since 2013. Today, it reflects both the architectural evolution of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and the adaptation of rural spaces to the aristocratic tastes of the period.
