Origin and history

The Abbey of Saint-Maixent-l'École found its origins in the fifth century, when the monk Agapit founded a community under the name of Saint-Saturnin. In 480, he entrusted it to Maixent (Adjutor), who established a monastery there which became abbey around 500. The latter, visited by Clovis, died in 515, and the site took his name. Thanks to the gifts of the Merovingian kings, the abbey prospered in the VIth-VIIth centuries, housing figures like Saint Léger, bishop of Autun buried on site. The Norman invasions (848-866) forced the monks to flee with the relics, returning only in 924.

The first Romanesque church was built in 940 on the site of the Maixent cell, but destroyed by an earthquake in 1059. Rebuilt between 1093 and 1134, it preserves a seventh-century crypt containing relics. The city and the abbey, however, suffered several fires (1075-1116) and destruction during the Wars of Religion (1562-1574), notably by Protestants who sank the batteries of the nave in 1568.

The Gothic reconstruction began in 1668 under the direction of architect François Le Duc, commissioned by the Saint-Maur congregation. The first stone was laid in 1670, and the abbey was consecrated in 1682, incorporating the remaining Romanesque bases. The crypt was redecorated in 1681. During the Revolution, the abbey became a temporary cathedral (1790-1801) for the Diocese of the Deux-Sèvres, then a parish church. In the 19th century, part of the abbey was transformed into barracks, before being returned to the city in 2011.

The Abbey thus combines Romanesque heritage (XI century), Gothic reshuffles (XVII century), and a complex monastic and military history. It still houses the relics of Saint Maixent and Saint Léger, while its seventh century crypt remains a rare testimony of the Merovingian era. Classified as a Historical Monument, it illustrates the religious, political and architectural upheavals of the region for 15 centuries.
