Origin and history

The Abbey of Escaladieu, founded in 1142 by Cistercian monks of Morimond, settles near the castle of Mauvezin after leaving the hostile climate of Capadour. Supported by Béatrix de Bigorre and her husband Pierre, she became a key step on the way to Saint-Jacques-de-Cominges, welcoming pilgrims and developing a hospice. His name, Escala a Diu ("scale to God"), reflects his vocation of welcome and spiritual rest.

Between 1141 and 1172, the abbey founded eight monasteries in Spain and two in Gascogne, extending its influence. In the 13th century, it participated in the creation of the Bastide of Masseube. Richness and power attracted lusts: during the Wars of Religion, Montgomery's Protestant troops looted it three times, destroying the bedside, porch and converse building.

In the 17th century, the abbey was partially rebuilt (sleeping transformed into rooms decorated with stucco, classical symmetry). Sold as a national property in 1793, it became a hunting event before being classified as a historic monument in 1938-1939. Repurchased in 1997 by the Conseil départemental des Hautes-Pyrénées allows its restoration and conversion to a cultural place (concerts, exhibitions).

The Abbatial Church (1142-1160), marked by Cistercian sobriety, preserves a broken cradle vault and an 18th-century octagonal bell tower. The capitular hall, with its arches crossed by warheads, illustrates the southern Gothic. The cloister, partially dismantled in the 19th century, remains only through a few columns. The Abbey also houses the tombs of the Counts of Bigorre (XII-14th centuries).

Located on the way to Pyrenean Piedmont, the Escaladieu embodies Cistercian art: harmony between stone and nature, with its centuries-old gardens and hills in the background. Today, it combines heritage and cultural activities, perpetuating its role as a meeting place and spirituality.
