The remains of the cloister, the gate on the street, the gallery linking the portal to the cloister (cad. K 29): inscription by decree of 19 April 1961

Origin and history

The Saint-Honorat Abbey of Tarascon, located in the commune of Tarascon (Bouches-du-Rhône), is a monument whose construction periods extend from the 14th and 15th centuries until the 17th century. The protected elements include the remains of the cloister, the gate on the street, and the gallery connecting these two parts. These remains, recorded by order of 19 April 1961, reflect the architectural and historical importance of the site, although its exact location is considered mediocre (accuracy note: 5/10).

Today, the monument is owned by a private company, raising questions about its accessibility to the public, whether it is visiting, renting rooms or lodging in guest rooms. The official address registered in the Mérimée base is the 5 boulevard du Château, in Tarascon, in the Bouches-du-Rhône department (region Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur).

The period of construction of the abbey, between the late Middle Ages and the modern era, coincided with a period when abbeys played a central role in the religious, economic and social life of the regions. In Provence, these monastic establishments were often centres of culture, reception of pilgrims and management of agricultural land. Their architecture reflected both the spiritual needs and stylistic influences of their time, as evidenced by the remains still visible today.
