Origin and history

The abbey of Notre-Dame de la Grainière was founded around 1130 by Benedictine monks of the abbey of Fontdouce, on an estate called Granataria offered by Gilbert de La Chaize, a rich poitevin. This donation, confirmed by a bubble of Pope Lucius II between 1144 and 1145, placed the abbey under pontifical protection. The first Romanesque constructions, such as the cloister gallery or the capitular hall, began at the end of the 12th century, illustrating the architectural importance of the site in Vendée.

In the 14th century, the chapter hall was redesigned in the radiant Gothic style. The abbey then suffered numerous destructions: fires and looting by the English during the Hundred Years' War, then ravaged during the Wars of Religion. Despite partial repairs in the 16th and 17th centuries, it declined irreparably. In 1760 there was only one monk left, and his property was transferred to the seminary of Luçon.

Declared a national in 1790, the abbey was sold to private individuals and partially demolished in the 19th century. Repurchased in 1963, it was restored and in 1979 became a priory of the Congregation Notre-Dame d'Espérance, now home to the only male monastic community in Vendée. Its remains, like the cloister or the ruins of the church, still bear witness to its Romanesque past.

The excavations and studies, like those of Claude Andrault-Schmitt (1993), highlight his role in regional religious and architectural history. Ranked among the historical monuments of Vendée, it remains a monastic place of life and a major heritage site.

Future

The Abbey of Notre-Dame de la Grainière was founded in 1130 by Benedictine monks of the Abbey of Fontdouce in Saintonge, and recognized by Pope Lucius II in 1145. It is located in the town of Herbiers
