Origin and history
The Abbey of Saint-Benoît, founded in the 12th century, was rebuilt in the second half of the same century by monks from Saint-Philibert-de-Tournus. This monastery, of Romanesque architecture, experienced its medieval apogee before declining from the 16th century, a decadence that saggravated in the 17th century. Despite this decline, the abbatial church was maintained as a place of parish worship from 1760, ensuring religious continuity on the site.
After the French Revolution, the convent buildings were transformed into private dwellings, leaving today only the east wing of the cloister. This vestige includes on the ground floor the old capitular room, remarkable for its portal adorned with historic capital columns, and on the first floor, the former dormitory of the monks, illuminated by Romanesque bays. The structure of the convent buildings, dating from the 15th century, attests to the architectural changes that have taken place over the centuries.
The Abbey has been partially classified as a Historic Monument since 1984, with extensive protections in 1996 and 1998. These measures concern the abbey church (now parish church), the convent building remaining with its portal, as well as the floor of the cloister and its remains. Today, the site combines communal and private property, with various uses including potentially visits, room rentals or guest rooms, although these details are not specified in the available sources.
