Origin and history

The abbey Saint-Jean-du-Mont, established at Thérouanne in Pas-de-Calais, was founded in 686 by Thierry III, king of the Francs de Neustrie. The latter atoned for the murder of Saint Léger, stressing his spiritual and political importance from the Merovingian time. The abbey, dedicated to Saint John, became an influential Benedictine center under the Latin name San Johannes in Monte or Saint John d'Ypres.

In the Middle Ages, the abbey prospered until the total destruction of Thérouanne in 1533 by Charles Quint. This event forced the monks to flee to Bailleul, then Ypres, marking the end of his local anchor. The property of the abbey extended to the church of Reclinghem, under its patronate, illustrating its territorial and economic influence.

Among the figures related to the abbey, Abbé Jean Fachin (curse "Corde et anima") and Philippe de Luxembourg, elected bishop of Thérouanne in 1496, embody his ecclesiastical prestige. Trivier of Thérouanne (Vth-VIth century), contemplative monk, and François d'Avroult, director appointed by Charles Quint, testify to his role in monastic and political life. Archaeological excavations and protected remains (the 7th century episcopal group, the Carolingian building) today recall its heritage, despite the threats of urbanization.
