Origin and history

The Abbey of Saint-Seine, founded in the sixth century according to legend by monk Sigo (or Soigne), son of the Count of Mesmont, developed in the forest of Cestres. After a period of decline between the 6th and 13th centuries, it underwent a revival from the 13th century under the impetus of reformers like Mayeul de Cluny and Guillaume de Volpiano. The abbey, prosperous, became a major religious and economic center in Burgundy, despite tensions with local inhabitants.

Between 1205 and 1255, under Olivier's abbatiate, work campaigns transformed the abbey, with the construction of the choir, the north crusillon of the transept and the lower parts of the nave. A fire in 1255 damaged the buildings, but the reconstructions continued in the 14th and 15th centuries, marked by contributions from abbots such as Guillaume de Vienne, Jean de Chaudenay-Blaisy and Pierre de Fontette. They left architectural traces, such as coats of arms or decorative elements.

The abbey had hydraulic infrastructure, including a mill and a water-receiving facility 500 metres south. In modern times, it was partially demolished after the French Revolution, its goods sold and its buildings transformed into a hydrotherapic establishment in the 19th century. In the 20th century, the Sisters of Providence partially restored the wings of the Abbatial Home.

The abbey church, in Gothic style, has been listed as a historic monument since 1862. It preserves 15th century frescoes, 18th century stalls and a 15th century facade. The cloister, rebuilt around 1745, and other convent buildings completed the whole. The plans of the seventeenth century reveal a complex organization, including a mill, an attic, a millhouse and fortifications.

Among the notable abbots were Olivier (1204-1228), Guillaume de Vienne (1375-1388), Jean de Chaudenay-Blaisy (1398-1439) and Pierre de Fontette (1439-1484), who contributed to the abbey's beautification. Benedict d'Aniane, a monastic reformer, also made his profession there in the eighth century. Medieval charters attest to the links between the abbey and local lords, such as Garnier de Blaisy.

Today, the abbey of Saint-Seine, owned by the commune, is an architectural and historical testimony of monastic life in Burgundy, combining medieval heritage and modern transformations.
