Alençon tower (cad. A 144): inscription by order of 25 September 1992

Origin and history

The tower known as Alençon de Roche-Saint-Secret-Béconne is a monument located in the municipality of the same name, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. This site has been listed as a Historic Monument since a decree of September 25, 1992, specifically protecting the structure referred to as the Tour d'Alençon. The precise location, although noted as satisfactory a priori, remains approximate, with an address indicated at 2505 Chemin d'Alençon.

This type of tower, common in French rural areas, could be used for defensive, surveillance or storage purposes, depending on local needs. In the historical context of Drôme, medieval or post-medieval buildings often reflected feudal or community organization, with buildings linked to the protection of lands or resources. The Alençon Tower, although little documented in the available sources, is probably part of this regional architectural heritage.
