Origin and history
The Alignés mansion is a medieval building located in the commune of La Chapelle-d'Aligné, in the Sarthe department of Pays de la Loire. Built on two juxtaposed mots, it illustrates the seigneurial architecture of the late 15th century, a period marked by the transition between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Its main house body, supplemented by outbuildings, reflects the residential and defensive needs of the time, although its appearance was changed during restorations in the early twentieth century.
The manor structure consists of a one-storey house, served by an external staircase, and extended by a building on the ground floor to the west. The most remarkable elements, such as the chapel and fireplace of the large hall, were protected by an inscription to historical monuments in 1927. This classification highlights their heritage value, linked to local history and the architectural evolution of the region.
The settlement of the manor on medieval mots suggests a feudal origin, typical of the seigneurial residences of the 15th and 16th centuries in Anjou and Maine. These mottes, often artificial, served both as foundations and as symbols of power. The renovation of the 20th century, although less documented, indicates a desire to preserve or adapt to modern uses, common for rural monuments of that time.
