Key figures

Francesco Cattaneo - Architect Designer of the rice factory in 1908.

Origin and history

The Alpine rice factory, built in 1908 in Modane, is an iconic industrial building dating back to the early 20th century. Designed by the architect Francesco Cattaneo, it was dedicated to the packaging of rice transported by rail from nearby Piedmont. Its architectural style, inspired by ancient temples, gives it a remarkable singularity in the Savoyard landscape.

Disused since 1939, the rice factory has had several temporary uses: covered market, equipment shed and gym. Now unused, it remains a rare testimony of the rice industry in France and its integration into transalpine rail networks. Its inscription in the Historical Monuments in 1987 underlines its heritage importance.

The building, owned by the municipality of Modane, is located Place du Marché. Its strategic location, close to the Italian border, reflects the historical economic exchanges between Savoie and Piedmont. The accuracy of its geographical location is assessed as satisfactory a priori, with an address confirmed by the Merimée and INSEE bases.
