Origin and history
The ancient Protestant temple of St. Dode, erected at the hinge of the 19th and 20th centuries, is distinguished by its sober and bichrome architecture, mixing brick and stone. Rectangularly, it is covered with a two-paned roof in mechanical tile. Its modest dimensions reflect a careful construction, where the brick bay lines and frames animate the facade.
The history of the temple officially began on October 25, 1899, when a prefectural decree authorized evangelist pastor Edmond Huc to begin its construction. The date of 1900, engraved on the lintel of the south door, probably marks its completion. However, no architect or contractor is mentioned in the archives. The building, disused in 1982, then became the property of the commune of Sainte-Dode, but this transfer gave rise to a legal dispute.
There is a dispute between a cultural and cultural association, the Central Society of Evangelization, and the municipality. The association claims the ownership of the temple and contests the assignment made. The conflict ended on 23 March 1988 with a judgment of the Court of Cassation, which definitively confirmed communal property. Since then, the temple, inscribed in the Historical Monuments by decree of 20 April 2015, has been fully protected, including its boundaries on the plan annexed to the decree.
