Origin and history
The Gate of the Dukes of Épernon's Garden is a historic monument located in the department of Gironde, on the town of Cadillac-sur-Garonne, in New Aquitaine. Built in the 18th century, it once marked the entrance to the garden of the Dukes of Epernon. Its classic style is distinguished by a bossed frame, a cornice surmounted by a rounded pediment, and pilasters that highlight its architectural elegance. Today it is the only visible trace of this ducal ensemble partially disappeared.
The gate was entered in the inventory of historic monuments by order of 6 May 1965, thus recognizing its heritage value. It is located northeast of the old town of Cadillac, 17 rue du Parc (or 5 rue du 19 March 1962 according to the sources), and now belongs to the commune. Although its original use has disappeared, it shows the importance of seigneurial estates in the region, where agriculture and gardens played a central role in organising aristocratic properties.
The Dukes of Epernon, influential figures of the Old Regime, owned a castle in Cadillac, now partially destroyed. Their vegetable garden, closed by this door, reflected their social status and economic power. This type of structure, both utilitarian and decorative, illustrates the art of living of the provincial elites during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, where the gardens were both spaces of production and representation. The door, with its sober style and architectural details, embodies this duality between functionality and prestige.
