Origin and history

The castle of Lafage, mentioned as early as 960 under the term of alleu, was a fortified building from which today only a circular angle turret remains. This structure, built in the 16th century, features a brief defensive apparatus: six rectangular cannons, a steeple, and traces of the courtesines at right angles. The original door opened at the base of the tower, between the walls of the courtyards. Transformed into a water reservoir after its acquisition by the municipality, the turret lost its original roof and did not retain any interior staircase. Its partial inscription in historic monuments in 1948 (for the turret only) shows its heritage interest despite its state of ruin.

The turret, of circular plane, is characterized by a device of medium apparatus on a few seats and a cornice profiled in quarter-round. The gunboats, located at low height, suggest a defensive vocation adapted to the Renaissance firearms. Although the rest of the castle has disappeared, visible remains make it possible to imagine its integration into a local defensive system. Today, the property of the turret belongs to the commune of Lafage, in the department of l-Aude, in the Occitanie region (formerly Languedoc-Roussillon).

The site, whose location is estimated with poor accuracy (level 5/10), is not open to visit. The available sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum) highlight its modest but representative historical role of small 16th century rural fortifications. The absence of stairs and roofs limits any restoration, while its current function as a water reservoir makes it a utility of local heritage. No information is available on any historic owners or sponsors.
