Origin and history

The Château d'Illiers, located in Illers-Combray in the department of Eure-et-Loir (region Centre-Val de Loire), is an emblematic 16th century building. Its entrance pavilion, characteristic of the architecture of this period, is reinforced by two foothills that expand into their bases. The gate, in broken arch, is distinguished by its two rows of harpsichords, while the rampants of the roof skylight are decorated with sculptures, bearing witness to a meticulous artisanal know-how.

This monument was partially listed as historical monuments on March 22, 1930, under the property of Caillaux. This protection specifically concerns the entrance pavilion, whose architectural details, such as windows that have lost their sills or the skylight retaining its carved sprocket, reflect stylistic evolutions and traces of time. The building remains a notable example of the castral heritage of the region.

Although sources mention protected elements and structural details, little information is available on its precise historical use or occupants. The castle is nevertheless part of the landscape of the castles of Eure-et-Loir, an area marked by a high density of similar monuments, often linked to the aristocracy or the local bourgeoisie during the Renaissance.
