Origin and history

The corps de gard des Veys is a military building located in the department of La Manche, in the commune of Carentan-les-Marais. Built in the 18th century, it illustrates the coastal defences of the Cotentin that were put in place under the Old Regime to protect the coastline from external threats. Its architecture and location reflect the military strategies of the time, adapted to the geographical specificities of the region.

The monument was listed as historic monuments by order of 14 September 1992, recognizing its heritage and historical value. It is a representative example of coastal guard corps, often located near strategic areas such as estuaries or maritime access points. Although its initial vocation is military, its present state and its environment offer a material testimony to the defensive concerns of pre-revolutionary France.

Located precisely in the Veys, a place called Carentan-les-Marais, this guard corps is part of a landscape marked by maritime influence. Available data from sources such as Wikipedia and Monumentum highlight its role in monitoring the Normandy coast. Today, it remains a historical marker of Lower Normandy, inviting to discover the military and architectural history of the region.
