The ceiling of the room on the first floor of the former chapel (Box BD 26): classification by decree of 24 July 1972

Origin and history

The former Carmelite convent of Chaumont is a religious building located in the Haute-Marne department, in the Grand Est region. His history was marked by a major transformation after the French Revolution, during which time he was occupied by the prefecture. This change in usage reflects the political and social upheavals of the time, where many ecclesiastical assets were reassigned to administrative or public functions.

The chapel of the convent, partially preserved, is distinguished by its ceiling on the first floor, classified as historical monuments by decree of 24 July 1972. This classification reflects the heritage value of this architectural element, despite subsequent changes. Around 1866, the facade of the chapel was rebuilt to accommodate a museum and a library, illustrating a new cultural vocation for the building. Today, the building belongs to the commune of Chaumont and maintains a tangible record of its religious past and its successive adaptations.

Available sources, including the Mérimée and Monumentum bases, confirm its address at 87 Victoire-de-la-Marne Street, as well as its status as communal property. Although its state of conservation and accessibility are not detailed, its inclusion in Chaumont's list of historical monuments makes it an important part of the local heritage. The accuracy of its geographic location is estimated to be "fair", suggesting margins of uncertainty as to its exact location on modern maps.
