Fortified entrance and fence wall: classification by decree of 5 August 1920
Origin and history
The domain of the Portal, located in Nieul-sur-Mer in Charente-Maritime, dates from the 16th century, although some sources evoke a partial origin in the 15th century. Today, the mansion has disappeared, but its fortified entrance and fence wall, partially crenelized, still bear witness to its past. These remains, including a double-lethal scald and a large door decorated with pinnacles and coat of arms, are the only preserved elements of the original domain.
The fortified entrance and the enclosure wall were classified as historical monuments by order of 5 August 1920. This classification protects an architectural heritage marked by defensive and decorative elements, typical of the seigneurial or manorial buildings of the period. The site, although partially in ruins, offers an overview of the techniques of fortification and ornamentation in force during the Renaissance.
The estate is part of the historical landscape of Charente-Maritime, a region where castles and manor houses were often linked to local aristocracy or influential families. Its location in Nieul-sur-Mer, near La Rochelle, suggests a potential role in the economic or strategic dynamics of the region, although the available archives do not specify its exact use or its original owners.
