Origin and history

The former Pasteur-Saint-Augustin hospital of Auch, built in the 18th century, is the work of architect Gabriel Arché, who directs the works in 1713 according to the plans of M. de Basville. The building was first modified in 1743 with the addition of the St. Sebastian Hospital, built in its extension. In 1789, the hospital was reported as ruined, but his property was returned to him in 1809, marking a period of rebirth for the institution.

Between 1922 and 1929, the architect Francou intervened to erect the east wing and renovate the chapel, partially modernizing the structure. In 2004, the façades, roofs, the entrance gate and the chapel were listed as historical monuments by the Ministry of Culture. These protections highlight the heritage value of the site, both for its architecture and its historic role in the city.

The monument houses a remarkable furniture heritage, including paintings from the 18th and 19th centuries, such as the Portrait of a bourgeois (1826) by Gabriel Lettu or Saint Vincent de Paul (1743) by Jacob Smets. The chapel also preserves an altar, a tabernacle and a marble altarpiece, attributed to the Mazzetti brothers (mid-18th century), all registered in 2000. These elements illustrate the artistic and religious richness of the hospital.

Historical sources, such as the works of Charles Joret (1890) or the archives of the Conservation of Antiquities of Gers (2006), document its evolution. The hospital thus reflects the transformation of medical and charitable institutions in France, from the Ancien Régime to the contemporary era.
