Origin and history

The hotel of Roux has its origins in the division of the livery of the Thurroye, the former cardinal residence of Avignon, after the departure of the Pontifical Court for Rome. In the 15th century, the family of Roux, some of whom were in charge of Villeneuve's royal viguier, acquired a northern part of the building. Ludovici Rufi was attested to in 1489. In 1535, André Roux and his brothers claimed to possess two pillars forming a balcony porch, bearing witness to the architectural changes of the time.

The hotel was structured around two opposite buildings, separated by a garden and commons. Built mainly in the 15th century, it masked several bays of the original cardinal palace. A major overhaul took place in the 17th century, before a partial dismemberment in the 19th century. Today, only a window and a side door with manerist style bosses remain, remains of his old ordinance. It was listed as historical monuments in 2002.

Two phases of construction are identifiable: the 15th century, with a remarkable fireplace preserved on the ground floor, and the early 17th century, marked by decorative elements such as the door and the window with bosses. Roux's family, linked to the viguier charge from the 16th to the 17th century, played a central role in its history. The site occupies the grip of the old palace of the Cardinal de Déaux, strengthening its heritage importance.
