Origin and history
The former Bouzet hotel, located in Condom in Gers, was built in 1763 on the site of the old fortifications of the city, thanks to a royal decree authorizing their demolition. This building illustrates civil architecture of the 3rd quarter of the 18th century, with a classic facade animated by twenty curved windows framed by flat pilasters and geometric panels. The central span, enhanced by bosses and a convex balcony, dominates the entrance in full hanger, accessible by a few steps. Inside, a monumental stairwell, stucco, woodwork and fireplaces adorn the rooms, reflecting the splendor of the mansions of the time.
The construction of the hotel is part of a changing urban context, where the demolition of the medieval ramparts allowed the expansion of the city and the emergence of new neighbourhoods. The building, now owned by the commune, has preserved protected elements since 1988, including the façade, the wrought iron ramp of the staircase, as well as rooms decorated with gypsum and woodwork. These spaces, originally dedicated to aristocratic or bourgeois life, now house classrooms, testifying to a heritage conversion.
The architecture of the Bouzet Hotel combines classical rigour and rock ornamentation, characteristic of the urban residences of the Enlightenment century. Latrines and old kitchens, also protected, recall the practical aspects of everyday life in these homes. The building, although partially accessible, remains a remarkable example of the civil heritage of Occitanie, marked by the influence of Parisian and regional models.
